Opened in 1980, The Leadmill is Sheffield's premier live music venue and night club.
National Railway: Sheffield Station
The oldest and most prestigious venue in Sheffield.
What a place! Used to go here 1, if not 2 nights a week, and loved every minute. Of course the toilets had massive queues, the floors were sticky and the bouncers not shy of getting a bit physical, but that was almost part of the fun. Great music, great atmosphere, highly recommended if you want a laid back, buzzy night
This is the venue to go for a good night out!!During univerity term times likely to have more on during the week and the drinks are dirt cheap. But the weekends are not to be sniffed at. The drinks are reasonably priced for a club and they play a mixture over the two rooms. Also a great venue for seeing live bands like mentioned in other blogs Arctic Monkeys have played, there are new bands that play on the steel stage to more well established bands playing the main stage such as We Are Scientists. And great news the royal is coming back to fridays.Always worth checking the site for band listings.
The Leadmill took a bit of a knock attendance wise last year due to the opening of the Carling Academy, but it’s still going strong and you can still have a blinding Friday night out at Royale (or any other night of the week you want to go out on!)Drinks are on offer throughout the week, during term time-time Mon-Thurs are regular student nights, so it’s 60p a bottle etc. Big names still regularly perform gigs at the Leadmill – you have to keep a look out for who’s coming to stand any chance of getting tickets for some bands. There are three rooms in the Leadmill – the main room being my favourite place to be. Appearances can be deceptive of Leadmill, due to it’s aging appearance, in comparison to the brand spanking new clubs popping up around Sheffield. But it’s still quality!

Cheap, nasty and rowdy, the Leadmill is one of, if not the, best live venues in Sheffield. The stages and atmosphere are so much better than others in getting that slightly seedy, defiantly indie vibe into the open and into your face. Which suits most of the people there, who fit that same description. Not always a good thing. Cheap and nasty, rowdy and raucous - don't come here timid. But depending on your own state, the sight of people falling over while trying to pull will either be hilarious or downright annoying. To be honest, if you're at the Leadmill you'll probably be a) a student and b) doing it yourself.
If your new to Sheffield and want to discover what nightlife Sheffield has to offer, look no further then The Leadmill. The drinks are cheap and the atmosphere vibrant but central to why I have gave a 5 star review is the live acts. The Leadmill pulls in some great names and has hosted the likes of Graham Coxon and The Artic Monkeys. Most students of Sheffield’s two universities, Sheff Hallam and Sheff Uni, choose the Leadmill as their venue for partying and throwing of the shackles of tough Uni workload, so it is always packed to the rafters each night.
The Leadmill is very well known in and around sheffield as the place to watch live music. It has been open for many years and attracts people from all music groups.Aswell as live music the leadmill also has club nights and nights dedicated to kids ( no beer or shots tonight ).Recently the leadmill has hosted bands such as the Arctic Monkeys and down the years badns such as The Wildhearts,INME,Wednesday 13 and many tribut bands. The venue itself is quite small but this is a very good advantage in my opinion. You can get very close to the stage and its great when sold out as the atmosphere is electric.Beer prices are good and service fast.I dont like their queing system to get into the venue though, the security leaves alot to be desired and girls get in first.Apart from this the leadmill is a good place to watch bands and also go for a club night out to meet new friends.
Back through the mists of time when I was a teenager in the early 90s growing up just outside of the city, The Leadmill had achieved almost legendary status as 'the' place to go to see up and coming bands play. All manner of groups and singers who went on to bigger and better things, along with some who deserved to, but didnt, used to play here. If you were out for a Saturday night at The Leadmill, it would invariably be a good night out. Very rarely was there any trouble, and the atmosphere was always friendly.I left for university, then left altogether for 15 years, but recently moved back 'home' and for the first time in years took the opportunity to go see a band again before I officially get too old. The Leadmill hasnt changed much in the time I've been gone - sure enough theres been a bit of refurbishment and a few licks of paint over the years, but the beers are still reasonable, the music is still good and the people are still (reasonably) friendly for the most part. Its nice that some things dont change much. Everyone I know who grew up in and around Sheffield has been here at least once, and has largely nothing but happy memories of the place.

The Leadmill is a great live venue with gigs ranging from Muse, The Artic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Duffy, and loads more! They have a steel stage which introduces new acts and has seen the likes of KT Tunstall, One Night Only, Courteeners and Kate Nash. With five club nights a week and a great range of live music the Leadmill has something for everyone.
