Gilder Group Established in the 1930’s J. Gilder & Co. quickly became one of the foremost car dealers and servicing garages in Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Initially operating from premises on Cambridge Street in Sheffield City Centre, motor vehicle servicing was the main focus of the business. This drive towards customer service survives to this day and despite many changes, particularly over the past few years, and with many still to come, the Gilder Group remains a customer driven business. Gilder Volkswagen In 1953 the VW Beetle was introduced into the UK and Jack Gilder was courageous enough to take on what was, at the time, a pioneering vehicle, which may have been rejected by the British public for all that was known about it. Fortunately for us all, the Beetle was a great success, and one that started out on the streets of Sheffield, as the very first Volkswagen Beetle to be sold in the UK was sold by the Gilder Family. It is fairly well know in the local area today, that the group has two Volkswagen dealers in Sheffield (Hillsborough and Banner Cross) a Volkswagen dealer in Chesterfield and a Volkswagen dealer in Rotherham. For many, the name Gilders is synonymous with the VW brand. The company name is now Gilder Volkswagen, which seems to be a logical step for two names so often put together anyway.
