I first had a suit made for me by Barney Goodman about three years ago. I am wearing it today and will, I suspect, be wearing it five, ten years from now. I certainly can't say that of any of the off-the-peg suits that I have bought before, no matter how expensive. The suit I bought fits perfectly and is just how I want it - no compromises. I will never go back to buying off-the-peg. One of the reasons I can say that is that it was great value. For £500 (I stress, this was a few years ago) I got two pairs of trousers and a jacket. I would have paid the same in Austin Reed and much more elsewhere. Besides the fit and longevity, don't underestimate the value of being able to choose just how you want your suit to be made. What colour inside the jacket? How many buttons on the sleeve? How many pockets? Pleats? Barney Goodman were really good at making sure I was ordering just what was right. And when I wasn't sure, they guided me in the right direction. You might be tempted to use the new breed of internet-based tailor that will have your suit made in Asia and sent back. I would recommend against it. It really is no cheaper and the real benefit is in having a suit that is personally tailored to your size by a professional.
